Paintings

Paintings made with rust and automotive grease on exclusively reused paper.

Metal shavings from resurfacing brake rotors is left to rust, transferring the reddish pigment to the paper. The concept of painting with rust came about when Sydney was machining  brake rotors on the slightly damp floor of a dealership in San Diego. After returning from lunch and beginning to clean up, she noticed the metal had stained the floor with rust. Brake grease was an obvious choice to add contrast to the rust in the paintings. The dark color has a subtle shimmer and can be manipulated to produce different shades.
